The first postage stamp made its appearance in Britain in 1840 and was referred to as “Penny Black”. It was issued by the government in order to end the system of complicated rates.
On the 5th April, 1890 the first ever Seychelles stamps which showed the name “Seychelles” were published, printed by a British Firm De La Rue, despite our first post office being opened in Victoria on the 11th December 1861.
Postage stamps are produced for a wide range of purposes. They denote geographical, political and economic changes.
This exhibition showed a variety of stamps collection produced during 1890-1953.
