In the early days of colonisation under the French rule during the reign
of King Louis XVI, coins were used as the main currency. The bronze and
silver coins were made for the administration of the French colonies.
Other coins that were used around that time were the Spanish dollars.
During the early years of the British colonial rule, the Mauritius dollars,
rupees or pounds were the main paper currencies used, but coins from the French
colonisation period were still being used
until 1919 when notes in the name of the Government of Seychelles
were issued.
