Our Core Functions


The Seychelles National Archives is composed of the Record section and Restoration section.


The Record section includes:

The Records Management unit

The Records Management unit answers to request (management unit) of semi-current records or semi-active records. These records required only infrequently in the conduct of current business to the registry concerned. However, when records are to be transferred to the Archives, the Ministry concerned will liaise with the Records Management unit to get advice on the necessary steps to be taken for disposal of records.

The Acquisition and Records Processing Unit

The Acquisition and Processing unit has the responsibility of acquiring all publications produced and published in the republic of Seychelles and prepare finding aids to access information.

Kind of documents acquired: Books, bank notes, stamps, departmental and ministerial reports, political, sports, cultural, religious magazines, all local newspapers like Nation, Isola Bella, Rising Sun etc...

The Outreach Programme Unit

The Outreach Programme unit is responsible to:

  • give lecture on the history of Seychelles in schools
  • organise exhibitions at the National Archives and at district levels
  • promote the National Archives to the community

The Research and Reference Unit


The Restoration section includes:

The Electronic Archives Unit
The Electronic Archives unit is responsible for the management and efficient functioning of the Seychelles National Archives database, network and website.

The Digital Conservation Unit
The Digital Conservation unit is responsible for:

  • transferring manual information to digital format
  • scanning of photographs and documents for sale to users
  • general conservation and retrieval of digital information


The Binding and Conservation Unit
The Binding and Conservation unit has the responsibility to prolong the useable life of archival materials in the two ways:

  • Preventive preservation: Reduce risks of damage and slow down the rate of deterioration. It is imperative to select good quality materials, provide suitable storage environments and follow safe handling procedures
  • Prescriptive preservation: Identify and treat damaged materials to restore useful access to research information
