Sir Walter Edward Davidson, Governor of Seychelles, 1904-1912, was born on the 1859. He went to Cambridge on scholarship and entered Ceylon Civil Service in 1880. Sir Davidson became Mayor of Colombo in 1898 and Colonial Secretary Transvaal in 1902. During his terms in office he made it a point to visit all parts of the Colony every couple of months, outposts, schools, road and water supplies. He worked closely with the proprietors. He built the Lunatic asylum at Anse Royale in 1907. It was during his administration that the “Le Niol” reservoir and “Carnegie Library” were built. He is also credited for the splendid design of the State House building of which he was the First occupant. After a term as Governor of Seychelles, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland, 1912 and of South Wales, 1918. Created Knight Commander of the order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), 1914. He died in September 1923. The Times described him as ‘a kindly and courteous English gentleman of the best type’.
